            <para>The CEPAVE Collection of Pathogenic and Symbiotic Fungi of Insects and Other Arthropods (CEP) compiles information on 687 fungal strains isolated primarily from infected arthropods in natural environments and agroecosystems throughout Argentina. The collection originated in the late 1980s from surveys of pathogenic fungi from insects of public health and agricultural interest conducted at the Center for Parasitological and Vector Studies (CEPAVE), affiliated with the National University of La Plata and CONICET.The dataset includes records from infected arthropods, soil samples, and water bodies, collected in protected and open-field agricultural systems, urban areas, protected natural environments, and aquatic ecosystems. The preserved strains belong mainly to the phyla Ascomycota, Entomophthoromycota, and Oomycota, including entomopathogenic fungi, facultative saprophytes, symbionts, and species with biotechnological potential.The collection houses three native type strains: Metarhizium argentinense, Conidiobolus lunulus, and Herpomyces spegazzinii. Additionally, some of the registered strains have been molecularly identified, and their germplasm has been preserved using various conservation methods, including deep-freezing, lyophilization, silica gel, sterile distilled water, and sterile filter paper.This dataset serves as a reference resource for studies on fungal biodiversity, taxonomy, ecology, the conservation of genetic resources, and the development of applications in biological control and biotechnology.</para>

        <purpose><para>The purpose of this dataset is to document, preserve, and disseminate information related to the diversity of entomopathogenic fungi and other fungi associated with arthropods preserved in CEPAVE Collection of Pathogenic and Symbiotic Fungi of Insects and Other Arthropods. The publication of these records aims to contribute to knowledge of fungal biodiversity in Argentina and South America, promoting open access to taxonomic, ecological, geographic, and curatorial information related to strains of scientific and applied importance. Furthermore, the dataset facilitates the traceability and availability of biological material for research in taxonomy, systematics, pathogen ecology, fungus-host relationships, and microbial germplasm conservation. The dataset also has applied relevance, as numerous strains show potential for the development of biological control strategies for agricultural pests and vectors of public health importance, as well as biotechnological applications related to metabolite production, plant growth promotion, and phytopathogen antagonism. The public availability of this information strengthens open science initiatives, cooperation among biological collections, and the preservation of microbial genetic resources.</para></purpose>
        <introduction><para>The retrieval and validation of information corresponding to the 687 records was carried out by reviewing historical curatorial archives, scientific publications, thesis, and documentation associated with the collection.The strains were isolated primarily from infected arthropods collected in the field, as well as from soil and water samples. Initial taxonomic identification was performed by observing macro- and microscopic characteristics using taxonomic keys specific to each fungal group.Over the past decade, some of the strains were characterized using molecular biology tools, allowing for the confirmation of previous morphological identifications and the reassignment of taxa to different genera.Currently, a significant proportion of the strains have germplasm preserved using various conservation methods, including sterile distilled water (4 °C), sterile filter paper (4 °C), silica gel (4 °C), freeze-drying, and deep-freezing (-70 °C). The viability and condition of the preserved strains are subject to periodic monitoring as part of the collection’s curatorial activities.</para></introduction>
        <gettingStarted><para>This dataset compiles the information associated with the fungal strains preserved in the institutional culture collection of the Centro de Estudios Parasitológicos y de Vectores (CEPAVE, CONICET–Universidad Nacional de La Plata), including entomopathogenic fungi and other fungal taxa maintained as living cultures. The database records, in a standardized manner, information related to strain origin, isolation, and identification, and has been structured according to the Darwin Core standard to ensure interoperability with biodiversity information systems such as GBIF.Each record represents a single strain and includes metadata on taxonomy, collection locality, collection date, isolation source or substrate (arthropod host, soil, plant, or water sample), culture medium used for isolation, associated bibliographic references, and the personnel responsible for sample collection and taxonomic identification. The dataset provides the metadata required to ensure the traceability of strains preserved in the collection.Records originate from field sampling and laboratory isolation activities conducted through research projects, biodiversity surveys, and diagnostic studies over several years. Samples were obtained by researchers, technical staff, students, collaborators from other research institutions, and private sector contributors. Taxonomic identification was based on morphological characteristics and, when available, molecular data, following the procedures described in the corresponding EML methodology sections.Dataset records were compiled from the institutional culture collection database and subsequently reviewed and standardized. Taxonomic names were updated according to current nomenclatural references, and information related to geographic coordinates, collection dates, collectors, and identifiers was verified. Records were checked for completeness, consistency, duplicate entries, and formatting errors before being mapped to Darwin Core terms and prepared for publication.This dataset constitutes a valuable source of information on the diversity, distribution, and preservation of fungal strains and facilitates their use in studies of biodiversity, taxonomy, ecology, and biological control.</para></gettingStarted>

                    <para>Collection records were compiled from the institutional culture collection database using Microsoft Excel and R scripts. Metadata associated with each strain, including taxonomy, isolation source, collection locality, collection date, collector, and identifier, was thoroughly reviewed and standardized. Taxonomic names were validated against current nomenclatural references using Index Fungorum and MycoBank, while geographic coordinates were verified and validated through the InfoXY tool from the speciesLink network (CRIA). Dataset records were checked for consistency, completeness, duplicate entries, and formatting errors prior to being mapped to Darwin Core terms for GBIF publication.</para>

                <samplingDescription>
                    <para>Fungal isolates were obtained through field sampling and laboratory isolation procedures from a variety of substrates, including arthropods, soil, and plants. The collection comprises entomopathogenic fungi as well as other fungal taxa preserved as living cultures. Isolates were incorporated through multiple research projects, surveys, and diagnostic activities conducted over several years. Samples were collected by researchers, technical staff and students of the laboratory, as well as by collaborators from other research institutions and private sector agents. Taxonomic identification was performed using morphological characteristics and, when available, molecular data. All isolates were incorporated into the collection following institutional preservation and documentation procedures.</para>

A major component of the project involves the implementation of tools for the standardization, digitization, and public dissemination of biodiversity information associated with the collection. These actions are intended to enhance the value and usability of the collection, which serves as a reference center for species identification, strain certification, research and teaching activities, technology transfer, third-party services, strain deposition, biodiversity preservation, and germplasm conservation.</para>
