Description

The following dataset include information on the observation of marine mammals, near the place of the construction of the off-shore Fénix Platform from the company TotalEnergies. the monitoring was made all through several steps of the execution of the project

This monitoring activities were made by scientists of the CADIC-CONICET institute which worked in a covenant with Total Austral providing their services in order to appropiately collect the information. The register was repeated in 3 steps of the platform construction: Pipes installation from the Vega Pléyade platform to the Fenix Platform, piles kneeling for the platform and first well perforation During the first two steps, the observations were made in the vessel Aegir from the company Hereema. In the final step, the observations were made from the Regina Allen perforation platform. The visual register was made by three observers. The observations were set to be done both before and after the construction activity. The objective as to check if the observations changed before and after the activity was done. The observations were made primarily with the naked eye and through 7x50 binoculars (Bushnell Marine) with compás and reticle. Both elements were used to register the tilt angle between the horizon and the individual or group of individuals and the horizontal angle between the individual or group observed and the point of observation. This additional data is necessary to infer, a posteriori, the distance from the occurrence and the point of observation. During the piles kneeling stage, the observations were made from the command bridge or its exterior deck if the climatic conditions allowed them, at a 20 m above water level height. This allowed the observers to have a good panoramic vision of all the area that surrounded the sound emission source.

Etendue de létude The study aimed to register marine mammals in the sorroundings of the Fénix platform coordinates during all the steps of its construction. The register was made by visual observations.

Description des étapes de la méthode:

  1. At the begginning of each day of observation, date, time and geographic position (latitude and longitude) were registered as well as the animals detectability conditions, sea condition through the Beafort scale, viibility (expressed in kilometers) and cloud coverage (expressed in perceantage) as well as precipitations. The conditions were updated whenever there was a change in them. For each observation, the species were determined (or the least taxonomic level possible), the size and the group composition ( eg: presence of cubs or juveniles) and the main behaviour of the animals in the moment of being observed. Moreover, the type of activity that was being done related to the Fenix platform construction in the moment of the observation. The observations were done during light hours continuously (7 hours a day approximately) , as long as the climatic conditions allowed it (Beaufort scale ≤ 4, good visibility and absence of heavy precipitations or snow)
